As the commissioned designer for this project, I was responsible for conceptualizing, iterating, and overseeing the execution of a large-scale installation. My role included:
Concept Development – Researching local cultural and design influences to develop a unique visual direction.
Iterative Design Process – Exploring different styles and compositions to ensure the final visuals resonated with Mwanzi Mall’s brand identity.
Execution & Delivery – Producing high-quality design assets tailored to the mall’s spaces, ensuring seamless integration with the existing architecture and branding.
This project not only elevated the aesthetic appeal of Mwanzi Mall but also set a new standard for commercial space branding in Nairobi.
The first stage of the design process involved developing initial concepts on a white background, allowing for a clear visual direction before moving into material selection and production. These early iterations served as a crucial step in aligning with the client’s vision and ensuring feasibility for fabrication.
Once the foundational designs were approved, I began sourcing a skilled woodworker who could translate the digital concepts into tangible, high-quality installations. This phase required balancing artistic intent with material constraints, ensuring that the final execution maintained the integrity of the original vision while being structurally sound and practical for the mall environment.
After presenting the initial designs, the client was excited about the organic shapes and bold composition but requested slight modifications to ensure the piece would align with Mwanzi Mall’s architectural style. They wanted a balance between contemporary design and a warm, inviting feel that complemented the space’s natural light and existing textures. Based on this feedback, I explored subtle refinements—adjusting proportions, experimenting with layering techniques, and considering how different wood finishes could enhance the depth and dimensionality of the final piece.
With the client’s approval of the refined design direction, the next crucial step was to bridge the gap between concept and execution. This meant two things: ensuring the structural feasibility of the installation and visualizing how it would integrate within Mwanzi Mall’s environment.
To achieve this, I transferred the final sketch onto a realistic photo of the mall, creating a photorealistic mockup that allowed the client to see exactly how the piece would interact with the space. This stage was essential for aligning expectations and making final adjustments to scale, positioning, and material choices before production. The visualization not only helped solidify the design but also provided an invaluable reference for the woodworker, ensuring precision in fabrication.
At this stage, I also collaborated with the installation team to discuss logistics—determining mounting techniques, weight distribution, and any necessary structural reinforcements. These final refinements ensured that the artwork would not only be visually striking but also durable and seamlessly integrated into the architecture of Mwanzi Mall.
With all elements aligned, the project was ready for fabrication—where the concept would finally become reality.
One of my favourite parts of this project was seeing the installation team bring the design to life. After weeks of refining sketches, sourcing materials, and ensuring every detail was aligned with the client's vision, watching the physical construction unfold was incredibly rewarding.
Seeing the design move from digital mockups to a tangible, large-scale installation was a surreal moment—proof of how collaboration between design and craftsmanship can transform an idea into a striking, real-world feature.
This phase was not just about execution but problem-solving, as the team navigated on-site challenges, ensuring that the final structure was both visually impactful and structurally sound. Watching the project come together in real-time reaffirmed why I love working on large-scale design installations—it's about creating something that not only looks great but truly becomes part of the environment.
